Cal¡co-Cal¡co demo

Band name: Calico (sorry I can't make the upside-down exclamation point on here :c)
Location: Langhorne, PA
Genre: Alternative Rock
RIFYL: Nirvana, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins
Recommended track(s): Open Door, Crazy, and Silence

So wanna hear something that sounds Bends-era Radiohead had a baby with Nirvana, and then was raised on good Smashing Pumpkins? Well then Look no further; Calico is here! Formed in the fields of Langhorne PA, Calico was conceived in 2013 by vocalist/guitarist Dylan McCollum, and Andrew Huston. After the adding bassist Tyler Asay, from the also-equally field-y town of Scranton PA, Calico has gone on to play venues and events in Philly such as Xfinity Live, The Grape Room, and The Fire.

Now we can get into the nitty-gritty about this band. I will start by saying Grunge isn't dead. It is very much alive, or at least grunge-y 90's alternative rock. Every track on this demo has a groove to it that totally that compliments vocalist Dylan McCollum well, who I swear to god sounds like Thom Yorke and Kurt Cobain's love child. For those of you who like the drone of Kurt and the tenor-y angsty screams of early Thom Yorke, well this is a treat for you. However, McCollum is also plays a mean guitar, and is not just a pretty voice: being able to jump between those leads and rhythm sections is quite the feat (see tracks like Lately). The clean melodies glide over heavy, fuzzy riffs perfectly, especially on the track Open Door.

But McCollum isn't the only talent here: The rhythm section is full of energy. Assay proves to be a very competent bassist, and is able to keep listeners interested with his runs in between transitions. He holds the fort down well, with a little bit of style thrown in for good measure! I would love to hear some vocal harmonies if he's able to sing! It would add a lot to songs like Open Door! Huston has a lot of power in his playing, and is able to keep up the energy even on slower songs like Too Late. Huston also has a good sense of pacing, and is able to keep listeners interested in spacier parts of the songs.

Calico's demo is a very interesting, and I highly recommend it for people looking for something to listen to on a rainy day. My one complaint is that there isn't an album cover for this demo to display. Otherwise I think these guys are on the right track, and I can't wait to hear more from them! Keep on keepin' on!
