RFA, Freaking Out Review

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Genre: Alternative Rock/Garage Rock
RIYL: Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Strypes,
Recommended tracks: Teenage Love Song

Freaking Out is the third EP by Philadelphia band Really Fast Automobiles. For fans of early 2000's garage rock style indie rock such as The Strypes, Arctic Monkeys, and The Strokes, this a band you should definitely be watching.

The band was founded in 2012, originally a three piece that played old rock and roll songs. This band consisted of current Members Dan Cousart, Christian Turzo, and Alec Powell. After a few months of jamming, the band decided to add Steve Macalee as their bass player, who has since been replaced by Drexel student Brendan McHale. This band has played venues all around the Philadelphia such as The Petting Zoo, The Fire, and now are moving onto larger venues such as The Trocadero. RFA is known for their great energy and stage presence. With the release of Freaking Out, the band has gotten it's first song played on WXPN's the key, Teenage Love Song, and hopefully they plan on moving forward and evolving their sound with each new EP or album that comes out.

Dan Cousart has a very strong vocal presence, with a strong crooning almost akin to Alex Turner of the Arctic monkeys, as well as him and the other guitarist having a very classic, garage rock style to their playing. A lot of the lightly distorted guitar tones are very close to the strokes form of minimalistic guitar playing, and compliment the way Cousart sings. The thing to look for on this album, would definitely be the lyrical content:

"Wish I could tell ya somethin else pertainin' to the situation brought on from him... but I'm too tired, I'm too stoned to think I'm probably runnin' low on gas..." (if I have transcribed that correctly) are just some of the gems you'll find in these tracks, as well as quirky little things like whistling the main melody on the first track of the EP.

There is one problem with it, very minute and very small, that could easily be taken care of on a full LP. Teenage Love Song and Too Much sound very similar chord composition and writing wise, and I sometimes loose track of where one starts and the other begins when I don't pay attention to my iTunes. I feel like if there was one song to separate the two, a bit more of a punch-y, uptempo song that would contrast between the two, it would be much easier to tell when that transition begins. Both songs are very good, and very well written; the problem is that they both have this slow, down-tempo feel, that would work better if there was something more akin to an older song from RFA's second EP like Alone For One Night. Otherwise I can't wait for a full release from these guys, and can't wait to see them play! Keep on Keepin' on, RFA!
